Enjoy a video of the Rhine Getaway - Viking River Cruises

TripAdvisor Review:

“Viking Rhine Getaway Cruise (8 days) Basel to Amsterdam a fantastic trip and good value--highly recommend” Reviewed July 12, 2016

We did the Viking Rhine Getaway Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam from June 26 to July 3, 2016 on Viking Longship Kara and it was the best trip I have ever had. The Rhine River is amazing to cruise on and there are all sorts of amazing sights just offered by the river. Viking, however, kicks it up several notches with a well-chosen selection of sights where they stop and offer tours. Every single day there was a substantial included tour for no extra cost. Among the included tours were a bus tour of Germany's Black Forest, a visit to old town Strasbourg including the famous cathedral, a visit to Heidelberg which included the Heidelberg castle, a visit to Koblenz which included the intact Marksburg castle, a visit to Cologne which also included the cathedral and finally a visit to the famous windmills of Kinderdiik. Speaking of the ship, our veranda A stateroom with balcony on level 3 was exceedingly comfortable and the food on the ship was outstanding. I am a foodie and pretty picky and I had almost no complaints. The food, with one single exception, was simply outstanding in both quality and variety and the service was equally exceptional. They also had entertainment nightly in addition to informative lectures on various topics such as European history, history of the Rhine, current affairs in Germany and France and such, and they were all well done. While there were some stretches of the Rhine that were industrial and/or not that interesting, a great deal of the Rhine scenery along the river was most beautiful and a delight to watch as we cruised past. While most of the cruising was at night, they did do some daylight cruising on the more scenic parts and I really enjoyed that. This was my first river cruise --it was fabulous. I think Viking strikes a good balance between price and quality and the amount of stuff they offer but don't require you to do. Some people virtually never left the ship while others were on the go most of the time. Another nice aspect of the Viking tours is that beyond voluntary tipping, unless you do an optional tour, there are no nickel and dime add-ons to the price. The stated price does include everything. -Rhine_River-Rhineland_Palatinate.
